I have a terrible fear of flying and the time has come again to board the plane to see my parents. I was doing ok and trying not to let the upcoming trip bother me until the 2 latest Air Canada incidences. I just happen to be flying Air Canada, same route! Flying did not bother me until we had 2 small plane crashes in the NWT with 7 people deceased. Does anyone have an hints on how I can handle this fear, how I can make the flight tolerable?? I am looking into Rapid Light Therapy which was recommended by a flight attendant. Cheers

Jo-Anne, All I can do is wish you luck and saftey on your upcoming voyage. I love to fly, so I really don't have a lot of advice. When I was younger and had to fly my parents always told me it was safer to fly then to drive. I guess if you look at the stats the percentages are far great for a car accident then plane. Whenever I fly I listen to a MP3 player and try to sleep. I guess you could do that and hopeful it will take your mind off your fear. I wish you the best of luck as you face your fear, and all the saftey in the world!! Ryan Posted by:

I have a big fear of flying. Up until about 8 months ago, you could have never gotten me in a plane. What helped me the most was talking to someone who has flown many times. Familiarize yourself with the overall process. Understand how planes work. Take an honest look at the statistics. It really is much safer than driving, not to mention much less time consuming. Believe me, having something to take your mind off of your fears while in flight is HUGE. The biggest thing, however, is to take that first step. Another thing that helped me is putting the actual time spent on the plane in perspective. If you have a three hour flight, just remember that in three and a half hours, you will be at your destination, safely on the ground. I will tell you that after you land, it is one of the best feelings in the world. A sense of accomplishment washes over you; it's really a relief! Best wishes on your trip. Collin |

Thank you both. Collin I have a friend who is a commercial pilot. I will phone him and talk about the process. (wow I sure sound like a FD) lol. I actually don't have a fear of flying I have a fear of crashing. Between my doc and my husband (he is a pharmacist) I will have some kind of happy pills to calm me down. Thanks again Joanne |

I'm a pilot myself and love to fly. I fly my family (and sometimes bodies) in our plane whenever possible instead of using the airlines.
Perhaps a few flying lessons would help you understand the dynamics and the inherent stability of flight. Who knows, you may go on to get your pilot certificate! That would be a hoot.
